About this deal

It's brewed with a huge amount of US hops for a fantastic experience of grapefruit, lemon and tropical fruit with an enticing bitterness. Excited to try more Thornbridge beers, he wrangled himself an invite to stay overnight at the hall and see the brewery. A new edition of Brew Britannia: the strange rebirth of British beer came out in July 2017, with corrections and a new format . It may not be reproduced in any way whatsoever without Wm Morrisons Supermarkets Limited prior consent, nor without due acknowledgement. The answer may always be slightly elusive, but in this series I spotlight certain benchmark beers, much imitated but rarely equaled to see if I can determine what makes them classics.

It is around half the strength of 18th- and 19th-century IPAs, and lacks the heavy hopping rate that, as the story goes, allowed those beers to survive months at sea to reach India. Bought 4 tins from Tesco - once opened lovely I was treated to lovely aromas - orange and grapefruit. In 2007, Dickie left Thornbridge to found BrewDog with James Watt, where he started by making another 6%-ish American IPA, Punk. For Lovatt and his team, the skill in making IPA is in the blend of hops—finding unique character within varieties and between them, rather than relying on one or two big-hitters and using those hops as marketing tools. Not overpowering with fruit flavours some but well balanced and smooth maybe zesty lemongrass flavor and pine with a low to medium bitterness level. We balance these with a great English malt base of Low Colour Maris Otter from Norfolk that helps keep the beer light and drinkable with enough sweetness to keep it all in harmony. As I have argued, cask ale is one of the most impressive forms of beer made in the world today, and arguably the most hand-crafted. Pete Brown had tried American hops for the first time at the 2004 Oregon Brewers Festival, and was telling everyone who would listen about the new flavors he’d tasted. On cask, these qualities blossom in astonishing ways that Americans have just never been able to grasp or appreciate.

Usually recognised at the First UK Craft IPA, Jaipur is the flagship beer of Thornbridge Brewery, the one that really helped solidify the brewery’s presence on the craft beer scene back in 2005. It wouldn’t matter what we did now, even if we marketed the hell out of it, we’d never be able to make a beer outsell Jaipur,” says Lovatt. This may affect nutrition and allergen information therefore you should always check product labels and not rely solely on the information presented here.Jim Harrison had hosted a few summer parties since he bought the crumbling Thornbridge Hall in Derbyshire, England in 2002, but this was the first at which he was serving his own beer.

Packed full of American hops, Jaipur’s hoppiness builds in the mouth and bursts with powerful citrus fruit flavours with a remarkably smooth finish. The New England craze only seems to have spurred sales, and anyone worried about the decline of West Coast ideals could look to Jaipur for reassurance. It may not be reproduced in any way whatsoever without the prior consent of Waitrose Limited nor without due acknowledgement.Approx 16-18cm long and 1 cm diameter – straight or slightly curved – dappled with fat and specs of pepper.

Recognising that not only quality but consistency and innovation are key to creating amazing and beautifully balanced beer. The rocky carbonation stiffens the hops’ spikier elements, which dominate the palate through to the swallow.Balance with a great English malt base of Low Colour Maris Otter from Norfolk that helps keep the beer light and drinkable with enough sweetness to keep it in harmony. Although the Jaipur Beer is English from production location through to traditional bitter taste, make sure you check out our other India-related beer reviews, such as the Kingfisher Premium, Kingfisher Storm and Kingfisher Ultra. A lot of breweries have a flagship brand they want to get further afield so they tone down the ABV or reduce the bitterness. We recommend that you do not rely solely on the information presented here and that you always read labels, warnings, and directions before using or consuming a product. It looked to the US craft beer scene for its marvellously hoppy character, while the name comes from the Indian city with its famous pink walls (which is why the beer’s label is the same colour), where Thornbridge founders and owners Jim and Emma Harrison were married.
