About this deal

Whilst this follows on from the first book where we are introduced to the Three Dahlia’s this can be easily read as a standalone murder mystery novel. I enjoyed the first book in the series and loved coming back to some of my favorite characters… I will be waiting with bated breath for the third installment. Posy had also registered the presence of Dominic Laugharne, another well-known actor of the old school.

Surely these fictional detectives can pool their knowledge and resources to find out the truth and catch the murderer? The plot is well concieved, and has several layers - and there is a good cast of characters (literally, as the action is centred around the filming of a movie). I loved the little touches that showed the bond between the three Dahlias and that they genuinely care for each other.

The story felt like a delicious puzzle to get stuck into and I found myself getting my notebook out to jot down ideas, very much like one of the characters in the book. I love the intertwining of film, books and Hollywood style life in this series, the little references to the Dahlia Lively books that begin each chapter are a lovely touch. Ex child star Posy Starling is finally filming her dream role - Dahlia Lively in The Lady Detective movie.

When a prop weapon is replaced with the real thing, fellow Dahlia, Rosalind King is at the sharp end, with almost fatal consequences. Rosalind, the original Dahlia, Caro whose Dahlia was the star of the successful TV series, and Posy who is bringing Dahlia to a new generation. I discovered this series about two weeks ago and since then I devoured the first book in the series (The Three Dahlias), the fun Christmas short story (Dahlias Decks the Halls), and now the second book, (A Very Lively Murder). I love the intergenerational play between the disgraced former child star with the social media experience, the middle-aged woman who doesn't seem to exist and the slightly tainted national treasure. But no - guess what happens during this night of being trapped in with suspects and building tension.

Just finished this book and I will need to rant - it will contain spoilers, so I'm hiding this post from existence. This is, without a doubt, the very best of the modern Agatha Christie inspired series and with any luck the excellence seen here with long continue. Katy Watson is the most perfect scene setter, so much so that I felt like I was at Ty Gwyn solving these murders myself.

The relationship between the three leading ladies (The Three Dahlias) is well observed, each bringing their different strengths to the investigation. Biography: Katy Watson grew up in North Wales, as part of a family of folk singers, storytellers and murder mystery addicts.Katy Watson grew up in North Wales, as part of a family of folk singers, storytellers and murder mystery addicts. A Very Lively Murder takes place during the filming of a country house thriller in the period following the Second World War, and the three Dahlias are three actresses of varying ages who have played, or as in Posy's case are now playing the part. The present cast includes some famous male actors, Kit Lewis, a black actor who is cast as DI Johnnie Swain, and Tristan Haworth, an aristocratic type, who Dahlia's wealthy Uncle Sol would love her to marry, which Dahlia has no intention of doing.
