About this deal

We already know that poor phonological awareness is often a major stumbling block for many children with reading difficulties, and that phonological awareness can be trained. Once you start investigating morphemes and looking at layers of language, exciting connections between words can be made and layers of meaning added, as well as some very interesting conversations. By honing in on morphology (which underscores meaning) students can surmount spelling hurdles by associating spelling with meaning, which is one of the limitations of phonics-based approaches.

The intervention was piloted in Hertfordshire with strong impact data, and it uses strategies known to be effective for learners with specific learning difficulties: it is highly structured, multi-sensory, targeted, cumulative and very engaging. As an intervention it is designed for learners aged 9 -13 for whom phonics has failed or is no longer appropriate, but it can be used across the age ranges in different capacities, and adapted for older learners in intervention. One of the things that has surprised me is that the intervention has supported my learner to develop his vocabulary, not just his spellings. Louise Selby is a primary trained teacher with 20 years of experience in teaching and supporting learners with Special Educational Needs in mainstream schools.

You’ll learn how to deliver and oversee the intervention, as well as how to use its key components and strategies in different ways in your setting. Still, I am continually improving accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. Word espionage” takes place twice a week to support transference of learning into class, by finding and examining morphemes in texts used in class and also in the learners’ class-based writing. The approach is logical and really helps students to make sense of language by focusing on the structure of words.

For example, cent comes from the Latin word for hundred and is the root for many words; centipede, century, centimetre. We have partnered with many of the most influential societies and academic bodies to publish their journals and book series. Many learners aged 9-13 still need literacy intervention, but phonics, phonics and more phonics is not always the answer. We know that teaching morphology can support reading comprehension, vocabulary development, word reading ability and spelling. You do need some knowledge of how words are made up or I could imagine it going straight over your head.

The first sentence of the book reads: “ morphology is a key component of how English words are made up…”) The assessment is printed very small on the page and it’s almost like someone photographed the handwritten copy of the assessment.

The conclusion is that reading difficulties often stem from weakness in some areas of language (and not just decoding and phonics difficulties).
